One of the Roman army's most capable and respected generals Maximus Decimus Meridius leads the Roman army to a decisive victory against the Germanic tribes on the northern frontier. Emperor Marcus Aurelius appoints Maximus as regent to save Rome from corruption. Maximus is betrayed by the old emperor's son Commodus and is set to be executed and his family killed. Escaping he is captured by slave traders and is forced to become a gladiator. Maximus must fight to the death alongside other slaves for the amusement of paying audiences. Known as "The Spaniard", Maximus's battle skills serve him well and he becomes one of the most famous and admired men to fight in the Colosseum. Maximus the gladiator challenges the new emperor's rule, avenging himself against Commodus to restore his former honour as a true son of Rome.
